Texas is the largest state in this directory by both area and store count. The two main hubs -- Houston and the DFW metroplex -- together account for the majority of in-person adult retail in the state. Houston's footprint follows the Westheimer/Montrose corridor through the Heights and out to the Energy Corridor; DFW's spreads through Oak Lawn, Lower Greenville, and along the LBJ Freeway, with a separate node on the Fort Worth side along Camp Bowie.

Austin's coverage centers on East Sixth and South Lamar, with a few long-running shops on the north side. San Antonio is smaller in count and more spread out. El Paso, Lubbock, Amarillo, and the Rio Grande Valley each support a handful of stores serving large geographic areas -- expect longer drives between listings.

What's distinctive about Texas adult retail is the historical regulatory pressure. The state enforced a sale ban on "obscene devices" (the so-called "Texas dildo law") until the Fifth Circuit struck it down in 2008 in Reliable Consultants v. Earle, reasoning that the Supreme Court's Lawrence v. Texas decision protected the right to private intimate conduct. That ruling reopened the market, but the legacy is still visible in the inventory mix at older stores -- some Texas operators carry distinctly broader novelty selections than counterparts in less-regulated states, partly because the post-2008 market grew faster to fill demand that had been suppressed for decades.

Houston is the largest single-metro market in the state. The Westheimer/Montrose corridor remains the oldest continuous concentration -- multiple storefronts have been operating since the late 1970s and early 1980s. Beyond the inner loop, Sharpstown and Spring Branch carry chain coverage; Sugar Land, Pearland, and Pasadena handle the suburbs. The Energy Corridor and Katy carry the western suburban market.

DFW spreads more horizontally. Dallas concentrates stores in Oak Lawn (along Cedar Springs), Lower Greenville (along Greenville Avenue), and along the LBJ Freeway and Forest Lane in North Dallas. Fort Worth's footprint runs along Camp Bowie Boulevard and the West 7th Street corridor, with a separate cluster along Belknap and Lancaster east of downtown. The mid-cities (Arlington, Irving, Grand Prairie) carry chain coverage along the I-30 and SH-360 arterials. Plano and Frisco have minimal in-person adult retail -- most North Dallas residents drive south to LBJ.

Austin's adult-retail scene is small but concentrated. East Sixth Street and the Riverside Drive corridor carry the central cluster; South Lamar Boulevard adds a few independent storefronts. The Medical Center and University of Texas at San Antonio areas have scattered stores serving the institutional populations.

West Texas (El Paso, Lubbock, Amarillo, Midland-Odessa) carries one or two stores per metro. The Rio Grande Valley (McAllen, Brownsville, Harlingen) carries similar sparse coverage; Laredo holds two or three stores. East Texas (Tyler, Longview, Beaumont) carries scattered independents along major arterials. The drive distances between listings in non-metro Texas are larger than in any other state in this directory.

Texas hours skew later than the national average; most metro stores stay open until midnight on Friday and Saturday.

Texas permits adult retail under the state's Civil Practice and Remedies Code and individual municipal codes. The state's prior ban on the sale and promotion of "obscene devices" under Texas Penal Code 43.21 was held unconstitutional by the Fifth Circuit in Reliable Consultants Inc. v. Earle (2008), which extended the privacy reasoning of Lawrence v. Texas to retail sale of intimate devices. The provision remains technically on the books but is unenforceable.

Cities including Houston, Dallas, and Austin enforce zoning ordinances that restrict adult establishments to specific districts with proximity requirements from schools, churches, parks, and other adult uses -- typically 750-1500 feet, depending on the jurisdiction. The City of Houston's adult-cabaret ordinance has been the subject of repeated litigation and is enforced alongside a separate adult-bookstore licensing scheme. Dallas applies SUP (Specific Use Permit) review to adult retail in most commercial zones.

State law continues to prohibit obscene material as defined in Texas Penal Code 43.21 and prohibits sale to minors of harmful material. Operators are responsible for ID-checking at point of sale. Many smaller Texas municipalities and unincorporated county areas apply restrictive zoning that effectively prohibits new adult retail entirely.
